Everything You Should Know About Watering Lawns

11:37 am by Hernan Edwards

In order to ensure a good-looking lawn, you need to ensure proper watering. Contrary to popular belief, watering the lawn involves a lot more than using a sprinkler or spraying water with a hose. As fresh water is gradually becoming a limited resource, it is also important that you ensure the minimum waste of water.

Watering the lawn in accordance with all these things is not an easy task. And if you are a beginner, this could be harder for you. To make the thing simpler for you, we have created an in-depth guide to watering your lawn. Go through the guide and you will learn everything you should know about watering lawns.

Water Requirements

The water requirement of your lawn varies depending on the soil type, grass species, texture, climate, desired aesthetics level and maintenance conditions. During the growing season, the turf usually requires one inch of water per week. However, various drought resistant variations could last with less water than that.

Water Supply

While water is mainly collected through rain, you can add additional sources like an irrigation system or lawn sprinklers. The water supply could be obtained from paid public sources or from your private sources. As fresh water is becoming scarcer, some municipalities are now applying restrictions on watering the lawn and gardens.

As a result, we may have to change our concept of a healthy lawn in the near future. In the meantime, you should take the necessary steps to keep your lawn properly watered.

Irrigation System

In order to ensure a proper irrigation, you can use different methods like underground irritation system, movable sprinkler system etc. Spray overlapping is necessary for ensuring an even coverage.

While the traditional sprinklers have to be carried through the lawn, automatic sprinkler systems can take care of the whole process in its own. The integrated time-clock could be personalized according to your requirements.

Watering Frequency

Deep, infrequent watering will resemble the natural weather patterns. The long gap between the watering sessions will allow the grass to create string, deep root systems. On the other hand, frequent, shallow watering will lead to weaker, shallow-rooted grass. To get the best result, you should water your lawn one or two times.

Proper Timing

The ideal timing to water your lawn is before the day gets heated, ideally between 3AM and 6AM. And if that’s not possible, you should water the lawn at the evening. You should never water the lawn during the middle of the day. While it can cool the turf, most of the water will be evaporated.

Special Tips

As I said earlier, water is gradually becoming a very rare substance. Therefore, it is important that you do everything necessary for conserving water. Here are some of the most effective water conservation tips for you –

  • Choose grass varieties that are drought resistant.
  • Get more moisture reserve by mowing high in the roots and leaf blade.
  • Use the rain gauge to find out how much water you need.
  • Always apply pesticides and/or fertilizers before rainfall.

In Conclusion

If you have read the article carefully, you should have a clear idea about how to water your lawn. However, if you are still confused about anything discussed above, let me know by leaving a comment below. I will try to make it clear for you.
